Barbie, created by Ruth Handler and manufactured by Mattel, was introduced to the doll community
​on March 9, 1959.  ​Presented as a 'teen-age fashion model', Barbie was created to encourage fashion creativity and inspire children to envision their upcoming adult life and careers.
